How is it calculated?
- Total weight = sum of every person's hours (or points).
- Value per point = total tips ÷ total weight.
- A person's share = their weight × value per point.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fairest way to split tips?
The two common methods are equal split, or pro-rata with hours worked. Splitting by hours is usually fairer because it rewards those who worked more of the shift.
Should the kitchen be included in the pool?
It depends on your restaurant's policy and local law. Many restaurants give the kitchen a lower weight than front-of-house service.
Are tips taxable or part of payroll?
